Rice is the fastest-growing food source in Africa, and also an important staple food in West Africa. With consumption set to grow by 70% to 24million metric tons by 2025, it is important for us to take advantage of the opportunities to meet up with demand.
Currently, there is an urgent need to increase rice production as we still depend on imported rice to meet half of our consumption needs. As the giant of Africa and a nation vast in agricultural production, one major way to revive and sustain rice production in Nigeria is to shift our harvesting process from subsistence methods to advanced methods like using harvesters. We can no longer depend on subsistence methods of harvesting or depend on the importation of rice when we have the capacity to produce and export. To meet up this demand on production and the standard that beats imported rice, we need to re-evaluate our harvesting processes.
For example, if subsistence methods of harvesting can harvest 10 hectares of land per day, using a harvester will harvest 200 hectares of land. This saves time, enables the production of more bags to meet demand and eliminates concerns of most Nigerians about local rice having stones and sands, issues which have long been caused by using subsistence methods.
Nigerian farmers, governments, and investors should pay more attention to the harvesting aspect of rice farming as this could be the game-changer of rice production in Nigeria.
